Verdict The X6 spoils its passengers with a refined ride, strong engines, and a cozy interior, but its sloped roof compromises its SUV practicality. Overview The X6 is here to finish what it started. The original X6 pioneered a new styling direction for SUVS: the dramatically sloped roof, which cuts down on some cargo space for the sake of coolness. Think of it as an X5 SUV that goes to the gym. Its athletic antics transcend its looks, too. The base engine is a peppy 375 horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine that gives the X6 plenty of scoot. The M60i runs hotter, using a 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 that's built for pounding pavement at high speeds. Both powertrains are locked to an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. The 617-hp X6 M delivers a far more aggressive experience but is reviewed separately. But don't let its focus on driving entertainment skew what's really at work in the X6. It spoils its passengers with a pleasantly elegant interior complete with an enormous infotainment screen that works a high-tech command center. The X6 has inspired other SUVs, such as the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe, to lower their rooflines. Which only confirms that it was the X6 that started the move to sleeker SUVs. What's New for 2024? BMW gives the X6 a makeover for 2024, with a revised front grille and bumper, new headlamps and taillamps, updated wheel designs, and a boost in power for the base engine thanks to a new 48-volt hybrid system. Output for the X6's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine is up to 375 horsepower, but the power of the 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 remains the same for this year. The performance-minded M60i, renamed from last year's M50i, carries the angrier engine and gets gloss-black exterior accents, quad tailpipes, and an M logo for the grille. The X6 is also now available with the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature that we first experienced in the new 7-series flagship luxury sedan. Pricing and Which One to Buy 40i: $74,895 M60i: $94,595 Despite the burlier sounds and gutsier acceleration that the 523-hp X6 M60i provides, we don't think it's worth the staggering price gap. Instead, we'd stick with the six-cylinder X6 40i. We'd spring for the M Sport package that includes a snazzier body kit and exterior trim, an upgraded exhaust system, a sportified suspension, and a unique steering wheel. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The X6 40i is powered by a 375-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that features a 48-volt hybrid system and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The M60i has the same transmission and all-wheel drive but its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 is significantly more powerful. Its 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque helped it rocket to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds at our test track. What's even more shocking is that the X6 M has up to 617 horsepower and is even quicker. Still, the standard six-cylinder powertrain is plenty zippy and velvety smooth. Both the X6 40i and M60i also have standard adaptive dampers and wheel sizes that range from 20 to 22 inches. Our test of the V-8-powered X6 revealed its impressive cornering grip and stopping power. Although its suspension is firmer than the setup found on the six-cylinder X6 we tested, it was never punishing. We also appreciated its adjustable steering heft and hushed interior at cruising speed. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Unsurprisingly, the X6's interior looks and feels like most other new BMW products. That means upscale materials and soft-touch surfaces abound, and two large 12.3-inch digital displays dominate the dashboard. While the instrument panel looks slick, the gauges are a confusing mess. Thankfully, the optional head-up display is more straightforward. The rest of the switchgear is also smartly laid out. BMW's gesture controls—which enable you to control certain functions such as audio volume by waving your hand in front of the infotainment screen—are included but unnecessary. Plenty of standard amenities are offered, too, including 16-way power-adjustable front seats, customizable ambient lighting, heated front cushions, and passive entry. 2024 BMW X6 M Starting at $128.195 Highs Effortless speed, luxurious cabin, Competition package is now standard. Lows Ride quality can be harsh, less space and visibility than the X5 M, the X5 M costs less too. Verdict The X6 M SUV is a bad-ass that can devour almost everything else on the road—SUV or otherwise—and that alone is reason to love it. Overview The BMW X6 M is a sloped-back brute-ute that packs a potent punch. It balances its high-octane antics with an interior that wraps its occupants in rich materials and a wealth of standard features. The X6 M offers much of the same content as its conventional looking sibling, the X5 M SUV, but thanks to its fastback roofline does so with slightly less cargo space and slightly more style. Propulsion is generated by a twin-turbo V-8 fitted with a hybrid system, which churns out 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. We’ve lauded the X6 M for its effortless speed and aggressive handling, and BMW claims that it's smoothed the edge off of its famously rocky ride this year. We’ll see. At the very least, we feel certain that the X6 M still has the chops to remain competitive against the likes of the Audi RS Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe. What's New for 2024? BMW has given the X6 M a facelift for the 2024 model year, complete with revised sheet metal that creates a more chiseled look, crisp exterior lighting elements, a spruced-up interior with a new curved center display, and a new V-8 engine and eight-speed transmission fitted with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. Additionally, the X6 M is now offered exclusively as a Competition model with 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The German marque has outfitted the high-performance fastback SUV with other enhancements, too, including new carbon shift paddles, more standard safety tech, an M-specific version of iDrive, and more. There are also three new colors: Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Isle of Man Green Metallic, and Frozen Pure Grey Metallic. Pricing and Which One to Buy X6 M Competition: $128,195 It's hard to fathom how less practicality can command a higher price. Still, the 2023 X6 M costs more than its squareback counterpart, the X5 M. We prefer the less expensive body style, but the X6 certainly attracts more attention. Every X6 M built for the 2024 model year forward will be a Competition model, as the package content is now standard. This means every model gets the same 617 horsepower from the hybridized twin-turbo V-8 engine along with an adaptive M suspension, 21-inch front and 22-inch rear wheels, a panoramic roof, Harman Kardon audio system, a drive recorder and a slew of safety tech. We’d be inclined to spec our X6 M in the brilliant Isle Of Man Green Metallic and tick the box for the Executive Package, which adds luxurious features like soft-close automatic doors, LED lighting for the panoramic roof, heated-and-cooled cupholders, front ventilated massaging seats, front and rear heated seats, and rear manual side window shades. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The X6 M is motivated by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 that’s paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which incorporates an electric motor mounted in the eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined output is the same 617 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque generated by earlier, non-hybrid Competition models. We’ve yet to get behind the wheel of the new hybridized version, which means we haven’t run it through our instrumented testing regimen either. That said, we expect the performance to at least match or exceed pre-facelift models. During our previous drive in the X6 M Competition, we lauded its lightning-quick acceleration, staggering cornering grip, and strong, fade-free brakes. While it rode smooth and steady on the highway, its large wheels and stiff springs contributed to a rocky ride on uneven roads. We appreciate the fact that this drivetrain can be told to distribute power to all four wheels for maximum traction or have most of it sent rearward for sharper handling. In addition to its selectable drive modes, including customizable settings that can be activated via steering-wheel-mounted buttons, the X6 M even features adjustable brake-pedal feedback. Those in cold-weather locales like us will appreciate the new Climate Comfort package. It includes four-zone climate control, heated seats in both rows, and a heated steering wheel and armrests. While the six-cylinder X6 exceeded the government's expectations on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our extensive testing regimen—earning 29 mpg highway, the M50i missed its mark by 2 mpg in the same test. Topping the X6 range is a BMW M model: the BMW X6 M50i. This ultrasporty flagship, powered by a newly developed petrol V8, is joined by another BMW M family member in the shape of the BMW X6 M50d with six-cylinder in-line diesel engine and four turbochargers. Straight-six units also see action - in the BMW X6 xDrive40i and BMW X6 xDrive30d. All models come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive enhances dynamics and maximises traction both on the road and over loose ground. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for petrol engines consists of turbocharging, High Precision Injection direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. The package of technology in the diesel units is made up of turbocharging and common-rail direct injection with piezo injectors. Exhaust gas treatment in the petrol models is courtesy of a gasoline particulate filter, which minimises particulate emissions. The diesel models employ BMW BluePerformance technology including a particulate filter, an oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorption catalyst and an SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. All variants of the new BMW X6 fulfil the requirements of the EU6d-TEMP emissions standard. BMW xDrive maximises traction, agility and directional stability in the new BMW X6, as in all BMW X models. In particularly dynamic driving situations, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system has a rear-wheel bias. In situations which do not require all-wheel drive, drive power can be channelled entirely to the rear wheels in the interests of efficiency. The car's sporting attributes are aided by the electronically controlled M differential lock at the rear axle available either individually as an option or as part of M Sport specification. It optimises the transfer of power in dynamic driving situations by limiting equalisation of the rotational speeds of the wheels on the inside and the outside of the bend, with the result that the new BMW X6 can power out of corners with exceptional élan. Added to which, the controlled locking function for the rear differential maximises traction and the ability of the X6 to put down its power on rough ground. A feature of the optional xOffroad package, it also optimises traction on roads where grip levels vary between the right and left rear wheels by preventing a wheel with insufficient grip from spinning.
