The wave of revolutions that came to be known as the Arab Spring began a decade ago - in December of 2010. Arabs mobilised in their millions in collective calls for democracy, justice and freedom of expression. Governments fell. Autocrats - names like Mubarak, Gaddafi, Ben Ali - went with them. In one country after another, Arabs were tasting freedom of expression for the first time. Voices that had been ignored or silenced were finally telling their own stories, driving their own revolutions. In this special edition of The Listening Post, we take a retrospective look at what happened in the halcyon days of the Arab uprisings. And we discuss the subsequent crushing of democratic movements; the clampdowns on freedom of the press that remain in place today. We have chosen to focus on the stories of three countries: Tunisia, where the movement got its start; Egypt, where it appeared to reach its height; and Syria, where it hit a brick wall. How two feuding countries are tearing apart the Middle East. Help us make more ambitious videos by joining the Vox Video Lab: 🤍 The Saudis and Iranians have never actually declared war on each other. Instead, they fight indirectly by supporting opposing sides in other countries and inciting conflicts. This is known as proxy warfare. And it’s had a devastating effect on the region. Countries, especially poor ones, can’t function if there are larger countries pulling strings within their borders. And that’s exactly what's happening in the Middle East. George Galloway's full address: 🤍 ABOUT GEORGE GALLOWAY: Few contemporary politicians have attracted as much controversy as George Galloway. A Labour MP from 1987 to 2003, he was an outspoken critic of the policies of Tony Blair and New Labour, in particular the decision to invade Iraq. It is 10 years since the Arab Spring shook the Arab world. In Egypt too, tens of thousands of women and men took to the streets to protest against the Mubarak regime, hoping to bring about political change. Yet shortly after the fall of Hosni Mubarak, women participating in public protests became targets of sexual and physical violence. Hend Nafea, Khadiga Hennawi and Mariam Kirollos refused to put up with it. The three women have campaigned tirelessly for the objectives of the Arab uprisings to include women, and to ensure that the slogan of "Bread, freedom and social justice for all" chanted on the mass protests really applies. They are willing to risk everything to pursue their vision. Hend Nafea’s story is at the heart of the film. Having developed from a college activist to a central protest figure, she was sexually abused by the military and is determined to seek justice in court. Despite criticism from her conservative family and obstructive red tape, she remains resolute in her vision of freedom. "A nation without torture is a dream that can become true", she says. ‘Days of Wrath’ offers a razor-sharp insight into the disturbing and troubled history of Egypt after the Arab Spring, the human rights violations rife in the country and the brave women fighting for justice and freedom in spite of all efforts to silence them. Grainy and shaky phone footage of protests and police brutality is perhaps one of few unifying and defining aspects of the Arab uprisings in 2011, which were dubbed by some as the ‘social media revolution’. The Egyptian revolution was the high point of what became known as the Arab Spring, a movement that spread across the Middle East bringing with it the possibility of democracy. A political solution appears to remain out of reach for Libya seven years after Muammar Gaddafi's toppling. The country is grappling with civil war, humanitarian crises and the threat from ISIL, leading some to question the 2011 foreign intervention that removed Gaddafi from power. "It [was] a huge mistake and I think both Libyans and the world is paying for it", says Hafed Al-Ghwell, a columnist at Arab News and former senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. "It was a civil war between two sides of Libya in 2011. There [was], and still [is], significant tribal presence that is in support of Gaddafi and ... still loyal to him," he says. "NATO and Europe intervened on behalf of one side against another." Mustafa Abushagur, former deputy prime minister of the post-Gaddafi government, disagrees. "What is going on today is really [that] we are paying for the legacy of the regime," he says. "If the intervention had not happened, Libyans could have been killed, thousands by thousands by the hands of Gaddafi." "When Gaddafi was toppled, there [were] no institutions in the country to be able to carry on," says Abushagur. In this week’s Arena, Hafed Al Ghwell and Mustafa Abushagur debate the pros and cons of today’s Libya. The June 1967 war was a critical development in the Arab-Israeli conflict, with consequences that are felt across the region to this day. It redrew the landscape of the conflict, expanded Israel’s territorial claims and confirmed its military dominance in the region. This war, known to Israel as the Six-Day War and to Arabs as the June War and as the Naksa – the setback – came just two decades after the catastrophic events of 1948, or the Nakba, when the state of Israel was established and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homes and land. The War in June looks back at the events surrounding 1948, and the Suez Crisis in 1956, to understand the roots of the 1967 war. It explores the actual six days of battle in detail and then looks at the profound long-term consequences of this war.
