To license this video for patient education, content marketing or broadcast, visit: 🤍 Reference: ANH13095 If you have obstructive sleep apnea, your breathing pauses for brief periods while you're asleep. Normally when you breathe in, air flows in through your mouth and nose and down your throat, also called the pharynx. Air then slows down your windpipe, or trachea, spreading through a tree-like structure of smaller tubes into your lungs. Each time you breathe in, negative suction pressure pulls the soft tissues in your mouth and pharynx inward. The muscles in your pharynx respond by pulling the soft tissues outward again, which keeps your airway open. When you sleep, it's normal for the muscles in your mouth, tongue, and pharynx to relax slightly, but not enough to block your airway. If you have obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles of your mouth and pharynx may relax too much. Your tongue drops onto the soft tissue in the roof of your mouth, pressing it against the back of your throat. This completely blocks the flow of air into your lungs. The lack of oxygen in your lungs wakes you up. You may gasp for air to reestablish air flow before falling asleep again. The cycle of apnea and waking up may happen many times at night, preventing restful sleep. Factors that may contribute to obstructive sleep apnea include obesity, because more fat may be present in the walls of the pharynx, a small or receding jaw with a narrowed airway, loss of muscle tone in your pharynx due to aging, and swollen tonsils. Common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea are snoring, morning headaches, chronic daytime sleepiness, fatigue, irritability, and impaired concentration. Left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea may lead to complications, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, irregular heart beats, called arrhythmias, stroke, and diabetes. Your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes to treat obstructive sleep apnea, including losing weight, sleeping on your side, not smoking, and avoiding substances that can make you sleepy, such as alcohol and sedatives. For mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea, an oral appliance may keep your airway open. This device works by pulling your jaw forward and moving both your tongue and the roof of your mouth away from the back of your throat. The most common and effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP machine. This machine pumps air through a tube into a mask that fits over your nose or both your nose and mouth. The mild air pressure of the CPAP machine helps keep your airway open, enabling you to get a deep, restful sleep. #SleepApnea #Snoring #CPAP

Uncle Nicko For many, learning to use CPAP Therapy can be extremely challenging! Especially in the beginning. Here's 3 important tips can help you get comfortable using CPAP Therapy. 1. Change your negative attitude towards CPAP. I know i know! You don't want to wear a mask. Who on earth would!? The truth is, you need to so it's not going to do you any good bitching and moaning about it. You need to start thinking of the positives. I'm going to have so much more energy! I'm not going to knackered all day, i'm going to have more fun with my kids, i'm going to have a better mood as i won't be tired and grumpy, my wife / husband is not going to be complaining of my snoring, i'm going to LIVE LONGER! I'm going to be healthier, happier.......I could go on for days! Get your mind thinking positive and that way you are more likely going to give it a real go. 2. Steady as she goes! Start at a low pressure and then over the weeks, gradually increase it as you get comfortable with each pressure level. You need to take control of your therapy! Don't be bullied by your health care 'professional' as more often than not, they have never actually used a CPAP machine in their lives. Learn for yourself what your machine can do! Learn how to adjust the pressure levels, learn what each setting does. Take the time to fully understand what your machine is doing of a night. At lower pressure you will find it a lot easier to get use to therapy. Your mask will be more comfortable as you won't have to make it to tight for the air leaks, it will be easier to breathe against the pressure coming in, you will find it far more enjoyable. Over time, you can gradually increase your pressure levels to get more control of your sleep apnoea but just take it nice and slow. 3. Don't stop until you find the right mask! There's literally hundreds of different CPAP mask styles and sizes available so there will be one for you.....You just have to find it! Make sure you educate yourself on how to adjust the mask straps and fit your mask properly on your face. Make sure you are cleaning your mask on a daily basis. Visit a clinic, ask them to show you the range, check out manufacturer websites to see what is available as you might not always get shown the wide range etc. 4. Be persistent and consistent. You need to keep at it. You need to try every night, you need to practice breathing with it on a regular basis. The more you use it, the easier it will eventually become. Every time you put that mask on and start breathing, your body is adapting to it, your face is adapting to the mask, your lungs are adapting to the pressure so the more consistent you are with using it, the faster you're going to adapt to it. I hope you found this useful. Cheers #cpap 00:00 - Cpap Therapy For Beginners 00:40 - Step 1. Get your mind right! 01:34 - Step 2. Start with a low pressure & build up over time 03:35 - Step 3. Nasal Pillow - My favourite mask! Seals at the nostrils with little pillows that push up gently into the base of the nostrils Pros- Small, lightweight, minimalistic. Easy to put on and take off. Seals well at lower / mid pressures, less red pressure marks on the face, great for beards and facial hair. Cons - Can hurt the nostrils in the beginning. Not great at high pressures and can be hard to exhale. Can't breathe through your mouth. 2. Nasal Cradle - Very similar to the Pillow mask but doesn't have the pillows that push up into the nostril. Pros- All the same as the Pillow mask and no nasal irritation Cons - Might not get the same great seal as the pillow. Can be a bit hit and miss at times. Can't breathe through your mouth 3. Nasal Mask - The great all rounder. Covers the nose and has secure headgear. Pros- Very secure with the straps, better seal at higher pressures, still small and minimal. Cons - More red marks, more components, more adjustments ( clips and straps etc ). Bridge of the nose issues, can't breathe through mouth. 4. Full Face Mask - Covers the nose and mouth Pros - Can breathe through nose or mouth Cons - Big and bulky, more prone to mask leaks, more red marks on face. 5. Hybrid Full Face Pro - Can breathe through nose and mouth, smaller than standard full face, no bridge of the nose issues. Less red marks Cons - Can be hard to find the right fit, prone to mask leaks..
