Dans ce numéro de « Secrets d’Histoire », Stéphane Bern nous entraîne à la rencontre de la célèbre Madame du Barry, l’un des destins les plus extraordinaires du XVIIIe siècle : fille naturelle d’une couturière et d’un moine paillard, elle n’a que 25 ans lorsqu’elle atterrit dans le lit du roi Louis XV… Digne des « Liaisons dangereuses », cette aventure galante échafaudée par son amant et proxénète Jean Dubarry, ne devait être qu’une passade… Mais contre toute attente, la jeune fille ravissante, experte aux jeux de l’amour, redonne le goût de la vie à ce monarque dépressif de soixante ans qui éprouve pour elle un véritable coup de foudre… Au point de combler sa maîtresse de cadeaux comme jamais aucune favorite ne l’a été dans l’histoire de France… Mais pour la sulfureuse et attachante comtesse du Barry, le sommet de la faveur va de pair avec les pièges d’une monarchie en crise. À Versailles, les humiliations pleuvent et sa pire ennemie n’est autre que la future reine de France, Marie-Antoinette, qui la méprise… Au lendemain de la mort de son royal amant, « la Du Barry » est chassée de la cour et se retire dans son charmant château de Louveciennes, sur les hauteurs de Paris. Louis XV was recently played by Johnny Depp in Jeanne du Barry but Louis XV is often the old King we see in any Marie Antoinette adaptation. His famous mistress was Madame du Barry (Jeanne du Barry) and he was the great grandson and successor to the Sun King Louis XIV. Louis XV had a lot to live up to in Versailles since his great grandfather Louis XIV made France into a global superpower. A lot was riding on his shoulders. He fought in the War of the Austrian Succession and also the Seven Years War against the British. He was the Kign before his grandson Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette took over and the French Revolution. Louis lived from 1710-1774 and died from smallpox. He reigned France for 58 years. The mistresses of the French kings are some of the most iconic and recognizable. Madame de Pompadour, Agnès Sorel, Madame de Montespan, Madame de Maintenon, Diane de Poitiers. These are just a few of the hundreds of women who came to dominate the French court. In many cases they all shared a similar background; daughters of minor nobility who knew the ways of a royal court and played their parts accordingly. However, in the waning years of the French monarchy, one woman scandalized the French court by coming not from the nobility but from the working class. Jeanne Bécu, later known as Madame du Barry was a self-made woman who achieved wealth and infamy by supposedly rising from a brothel to King Louis XV’s bed. Depicted both during her lifetime and after as a vulgar, social climbing courtesan, Madame du Barry has rarely gotten a fair depiction. However, when truly analysed, what she was able to achieve by the age of 25 is nothing less than astonishing. Johnny Depp is reportedly looking forward to his upcoming return to the big screen. The actor is starring as King Louis XV in the French-language film "Jeanne du Barry," which is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month. It marks his first onscreen role since his and ex-wife Amber Heard's defamation trial. A source close to Depp tells People that since the trial, Depp has been living in Europe and "focused on work." Présenté en ouverture du festival de Cannes 2023, "Jeanne du Barry" se poserait presque comme une sorte d’autoportrait de Maïwenn, sa réalisatrice qui joue aussi le rôle-titre omniprésent de la dernière favorite de Louis XV, interprété, lui, par Johnny Depp. La réalité rattrapant le film, qui couronne en roi de France une star déchue américaine, crée forcément un malaise, mais donne, selon nos critiques, une image intéressante. Si le style d’habitude visible de la réalisatrice est effacé par les contraintes d’une superproduction en costumes ou si l’intérêt porté aux personnages féminins est pour le moins trouble, la grande fresque de Maïwenn arrive à sortir de la vignette historique classique et fait la part belle aux rôles masculins – c’est toujours ça.
