In this movie I build a bushcraft sawmill to build a log cabin for survival in the wild. The sawmill also functions as a mill, as it was done in the Middle Ages. I showed the mechanisms used in water and windmills. In the mill, I grind wheat and corn grain, catch and cook carp and perch in the hanging wood stove. The wood stove I've been using for the past two years has functioned well as a source of heat, but it was less than ideal for cooking. This week, I remove it and install a LaNordica Rosa L cookstove, complete with an oven and removable rings for stove top cooking. To test out the oven, I bake a loaf of bread, which turned out perfectly in the easy to control oven where I kept the temperature at 450F for the full 45 minutes of baking time. My 3 day fall hike in Alaska's mountains hit a snag with a snow storm in mid September. I got soaked through and frozen with a foot of snow falling around me. I had to take shelter in an off grid mountain cabin and try to get my body heat back. 4 years ago I felt lost, even though society had clearly paved the path for me. I was 17 and living in Stockholm Sweden. After seeing the documentary "Alone in the wilderness" by Dick Proenneke, I became completely obsessed with the idea of just packing a rucksack of hand tools and wondering off into the vast forest of Sweden to create my own life, living off the land and build a log cabin. I found my meaning, but I was still in high school. My Grandparents owned forest so I started spending more and more time with them every weekend, wandering out, dreaming of my obsession and asking for advise. I had absolutely no prior knowledge of anything how I was going to do this, just the obsession to learn. When I turned 18 I told everyone of my plans. I received a gopro camera from my parents, so I could at least film some of my adventures. I hadn't even thought about filming anything but I did so and am I glad I did. It is a long story from here of hard work, pain, cold, making many many mistakes and figuring out how to solve problems all alone by trial and error. But I finally built the cabin all alone after 3 years. Along the way I also became passionate in filmmaking, so I invested in a better camera. The whole journey is filmed on a tripod by myself, which was lets just say a struggle (I am insane). Some people will doubt this and say I had a film crew and construction team, which I just take as a big complement. I know my journey and I hope to inspire others the same way Dick Proenneke inspired me. This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. We have spent the past 2.5 years building this cabin from scratch and our goal has been to use only hand tools, no power tools. All of the logs were harvested from our property. This week at the cabin, I build stairs into the breezeway and log cabin from the new outdoor kitchen and then glue pine boards together to make 12 feet of countertops. I install the first countertop and a double sink beside the wood cookstove and next to the water tote that will provide rainwater to the kitchen. We bought a cabin and are moving into it! After spending the last 4 years living off grid, we knew that it was time to make a change! How did we end up here? It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward. Some folks say that a log cabin is not finished unless there is a stone and mortar hearth or fireplace. I have been delaying this project largely because I have almost no experience working with concrete and stone. It started off looking a bit rough. but as I continued to work at it, I was able to create a functional and (to me) esthetically pleasing hearth. I also did some upgrades to the cabin including refinishing the floor, installing shelves, and redoing the window frames. The first frost of the season has arrived, so I'm focusing on doors in this video. I design and make heavy doors from pine and alder. I made a 4" thick wooden frame and added Styrofoam inside, this will help keep the heat inside the log house much more effective. The temperature outside sometimes dropped to -5 degrees Celsius, so I had to work inside the log cabin. Making the herringbone pattern was much more difficult than I expected, so it took me 3 whole days. Now that the door is installed, I can comfortably work inside the log house. Also, at the beginning of the video, I painted the walls with motor oil, this will protect the wood from weather conditions. Sometimes I take a break to play with my dog Joy, which helps me clear my mind and get back to work with renewed energy. This is a super remote and very dramatic off-grid cabin that hovers 60 feet above the ground thanks to a clever design that uses cross-laminated timber (CLT) and a steel mast in a unique way! The cabin is 100 feet long with the last 25 feet being cantilevered, and the south-facing side is entirely composed of windows to optimize solar gain in the winter. The m.o.r.e. CLT cabin was designed by Paul Kariouk of Kariouk Architects, and it's also his home away from home that he shares with his partner Antonio. They spend as much time as they can here, even when it means snowshoeing or cross-country skiing in on the unplowed 5km-long driveway carrying everything on their backs! It is completely off the grid, and it has a well for fresh water, solar panels for electricity, wood for heat, and propane for cooking.
